Oil Painting Techniques

For anyone who wishes to brush up on basic oil painting techniques, we will focus on producing “mini-works” that demonstrate different techniques. These may include glazing, impasto, dry brush, and simple blending and shading techniques. We will work from a single object or shape to easily visualize the different effects that can be achieved simply by changing the application. Color mixing and brush use will also be covered. Students bring all supplies. See button above for supply list.

Build and Frame Workshop

So, you'd like to paint a picture? You have your subject, your paints and brushes, but, what about your canvas? What if the dimensions of your desired work do not exist in the pre-stretched lexicon of choices? And then… once your work is completed and signed, how can you make a simple and effective frame to finish it, finally getting it ready to proudly hang?

This workshop will see you through the construction of a stretcher frame, help you stretch and prime your canvas, and finally frame and wire your work for hanging. Additionally, there will be a demonstration of the construction of a simple frame for your finished work. Should you wish to build a frame, please bring your finished work and contact the workshop facilitator for further details. All necessary tools and supplies for the building of a stretcher frame will be provided. These may include but not be limited to stretcher strips, unprimed canvas, staples, gesso primer, hanging wire, fasteners, and nails. Participants must register at least one week before start of class to allow for purchase of materials per size requests, as well to provide any further details. Dimensions must not exceed 30" for any length of side.
